Book Description Millgate 1988 1st., 1988. 136pp. Illustrated. 21x15. No writing or inscriptions; Very Good in Very Good pictorial card coverJune 1940 the evacuation of British forces from France was underway, and from St Nazaire various large vessels were involved. When, on June 17 1940 the Cunard liner Lancastria departed from St Nazaire, the ship was not just fully loaded, she was grossly overloaded with people. Shortly after leaving the port she was attacked and sunk by German bombers and. some say over 6,000 perished as she turned over and sank. Churchill, however, refused to release details of the tragedy fearful of its effect on public morale at a time when feelings were already at their lowest possible ebb. It is the greatest ever loss of life in the sinking of a single British ship. This book describes the tragic event through a compilation of eye-witness accounts. Bookseller Inventory # 18136
