This conference, organized on behalf of the UKIC, follows on from the gilding and surface decoration meeting of 1991. There is a need for conservators to share their practical information on lacquerwork and japanning, and we hope that this publication will form a basis for future discussion. The conference had a distinctly international flavour with papers from Germany on the material testing of lacquer and shellac, from Canada on the use of modern and traditional fillers, from the United States on the microscopy and analysis of overvarnish, and papers from England on the practical aspects of cleaning and adhesion. Together they reflect the numerous considerations necessary when dealing with lacquered and japanned objects.
