Synopsis

While the subjects of health and healing have been topics of interest to virtually everyone over the years, there have been few books that have considered these subjects systematically in a biblical context and in a comprehensive way that includes both their medical and theological aspects. John Wilkinson begins his study by comparing the medical and theological understanding of healing, and examining the biblical concept of health as found in each Testament. He then focuses on the Old Testament, identifying the various diseases that are described there, and discussing what the Old Testament means by healing. Turning to the New Testament, the author examines how healing is described in the Gospels, providing a full discussion of the healing miracles of Jesus, including suggestions for the nature of the diseases and the methods chosen to heal them. Three miracles are chosen for fuller those involving the epileptic boy, the bent woman, and the man born blind. Wilkinson then moves on to the apostolic church, considering first the healing miracles recorded in Acts and then turning to the epistles, where he explores such things as Paul s "thorn in the flesh" and James instructions for healing. The final part of the book looks at healing in the history of the church up to modern times. It begins by considering the relevance for the modern church of the healing commission given by Jesus to his disciples, and ends with a discussion of the basis and practice of the church s healing ministry in the world today.
