This work gives a detailed first view of the New Extension to the Al Masjid al Haram, or Great Mosque, at Mecca, the building of which began in 1991, to accommodate growing pilgrim numbers. It covers the history (pre-Islamic Mecca, the Hajj, Kaabah, developments under the Umayyads, Abbasids and Ottomans, and urban development), the New Extension (the major part of this work), and engineering factors and supporting projects. The drawings show design features and ornamentation, elevations and sections of domes, floors and roofs. The specially commissioned photos show panoramic views and various features. The Foreword describes the role played by King Fahd, with photos of him examining plans and laying the foundation stone. Lead author Dr Muhammad Kamal Ismail was design consultant to the project. Editor Dr Salma Damluji is an architect, academic, and specialist in Arab and Islamic architecture. A companion volume was prepared for the Prophet's Mosque at Medina. Seller Inventory # 3165
