This manual is for people who intend to become professional pilots, and who are now at an early stage of their preparation for a flying career, say, somewhere between private Private Pilot's License [PPL] and recent attainment of Commercial Pilot's License [CPL]. It is, however, relevant to all commercial, transport and private pilots in all countries. It is about fitness for flight. Pilots know they must be medically fit to fly. It's not just common sense, it is a legal requirement. Most pilots will appreciate the importance of being physically fit. At the end of a long day, landing into the sun, with a buffeting cross-wind, the fit pilot will have more accessible energy. Use of skills depletes energy reserves. The tired pilot cannot cope as well with difficult conditions. Fatigue causes skill-deterioration. But cognitively fit? It is not a common concept. It should be, but it's not. Thinking hard over long periods is mentally tiring. Cognitive skills do suffer from fatigue. Physical exercise will increase fitness, and thus bring about benefits that contribute to safer flight. That proposition's cognitive counterpart is no more extraordinary__that good, hard workout of your ways of thinking__ways of thinking that are used in flight__will also enhance flight safety. This manual will permit you to do that__exercise your mind__in ways that will develop your "in-flight-thinking-muscles". There are several themes to be followed. However, it is primarily about how pilots cope with the terrible stress that will afflict them in an in-flight emergency, how they deal with fear and confusion ... and panic. If you practice with__exercise__your fear responses, then you will be better equipped to minimize their impact on you, in an emergency. The manual shows you how to exercise your mind ...
