The author considers this a novel. Many would say it is actually a biography of Liang Shiyi. It is steeped in history and much of the dialogue comes from actual letters and documents. The book also includes photos of Liang Shiyi and many participants in his life.

Beijing Odyssey is an authentic, carefully researched novel about the wrenching changes in China and Chinese minds during a crucial period in Chinese history. All is there in the life of Liang Shiyi, one of the last scholar officials of the Manchu Dynesty and a behind-the-scenes operator in the dangerous stumbling early years of the Chinese Republic. Liang Shiyi, who made his mark in the development of railways and the Chinese banking system, led a colorful private life with his wife and six concubines in his large well-off family. Thoughout his lifetime, foreign imperialism clashed with Chinese nationalism as he struggled to adjust Confucian ways to the dream of a modern yet orderly China. --Charles T. Cross, Ambassador of the United States of America (ret.)
Americans have long been fascinated with China, but not always knowledgeable about it. With China again a major player in the world economy, we have even more reason to learn about it, and no more pleasant way than through the story that Steve Au recounts of a major participant's role in the wrenching events that brought China from isolation into the modern world. The adventrues of Liang Shiyi during China's industrial and political transformation give us a deeper insight into China's past and present than any simple recital of facts can provide. --Herbsert A. Simon, Univesrsity Professor, Carnegie Mellon University; Erstwhile Chairman, Committee on Scholarly Communication with China
