9781878220752: Lewis & Clark: Weather and Climate Data from the Expedition Journals (Historical Monographs)

The Lewis and Clark Expedition (1803–06) systematically recorded weather and climate data during their 4,162-mile journey. This volume collects all such data from their various journals, describes the importance of this first-of-its-kind meteorological undertaking, and includes a color pictorial of the Lewis and Clark Trail. It will serve as a compelling resource for weather, history, and Lewis and Clark buffs alike, as well as for scientists looking back at weather and climate in the early 1800s.

About the Author:

Vernon Preston, National Weather Service warning coordination meteorologist, marked the beginning of the bicentennial anniversary of the Lewis and Clark expedition (1803-1806) by compiling the weather and climate data from various expedition journals. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) published this information as a technical memorandum in 2004 and distributed 100 copies. In this volume, the American Meteorological Society has reformatted the data and included explanations of the significance of the expedition s meteorological studies. The result is a lasting record that will benefit generations of history buffs and scientists alike.

Review:

The easy-to-use format makes this a great reference or a great read cover to cover. --Tanja Fransen, Warning Coordination Meteorologist, NWS

Lewis and Clark s pioneering weather observations add another small piece to the climate puzzle, serving as an overarching link between early nineteenth-century climate data and our efforts to model climate change today. --Terrence R. Nathan, Atmospheric Science Program

Vernon Preston s impressive and very thorough book Lewis and Clark: Weather and Climate Data from the Expedition Journals, is not the kind of book that one would pick up and read sequentially. Rather, it stands as the definitive reference on the weather encountered by the Expedition and the perception of that weather by the team. This is not the kind of book that a casual reader would enjoy; rather, it is one for history buffs and weather geeks. Within that admittedly narrow audience, the book truly delivers.... When it comes to a comprehensive and well-organized reference book on the weather encountered by Lewis and Clark, Vernon Preston s stands alone. --George Taylor for Oregon History Quarterly, vol. 209, no. 2
