The Sheltered Valley: In 1868, the Civil War had been over for only three years and in the South former slaves were filled with hope as they tested their new freedom. In the North, quite distant from the changes of the reconstruction, William Edward Burghardt Du Bois was born.
William was a "Northern Negro." His mother's family, the Burghardts, had lived for generations in Great Barrington, Massachusetts. The Burghardts were among the oldest inhabitants of this quiet town sheltered by the great Berkshire hills of western Massachusetts. Since social prestige was based on ancestry and property, his family received much respect from their neighbors.
