A Rascal's Craft captures the musings of a turn of the 20th century Finnish immigrant, Eelu Kiviranta, describing his feelings about departing the old country and establishing a new home in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. A snapshot of life in Michigan's Copper Country is depicted in this series of poems, many of which are written in the Finnish storytelling tradition of arkkiveisu, describing a variety of contemporary events -- such as what it was like to work in the copper mines, to serving in the Finnish army, to the sinking of the Titanic. Published in their original Finnish and translated into English for the first time, the poems and their translations remain true to their style and enchanting rhyme, providing Finnophiles with a rare and enjoyable cultural experience. This book was made possible in part by a grant from the Finlandia Foundation National.

Eelu Kiviranta was a self-described rascal with such a gift for rhyme that when spoken to, he often replied in rhyme. He served in the Finnish army before leaving wretched conditions in Finland in search for a better life for his family in Michigan's Copper Country. He augmented his living as a dairy farmer by offering his poetry for sale to regular folks -- some of whom delighted in his wit, and others who chased him from their door. A Rascal's Craft includes 45 of Kiviranta's original poems in Finnish, translated into English by his granddaughter, Lillian Lehto, a retired teacher and librarian.Review:
I am absolutely pleased that this collection of Eelu Kiviranta's poems has been translated and published, making it available to a greater number of readers. Kiviranta's Finnish immigrant perspective regarding the realities of early 20th century life in Michigan's Upper Peninsula is in a class of its own. One could say Eelu is the Kalevala-style bard of the Copper Country. --James N. Kurtti, Director of the Finnish American Heritage Center
