Trail Length: 6 miles one-way Trail Condition: excellent Elevation Gain: 3,700 feet Estimated Duration of Hike: 3 to 4 hours up, 2 to 3 hours down

Sweat Index: difficult Best Features: beautiful alpine lakes, rugged mountain scenery Availability of Water Along the Trail: The trail parallels Flower Creek much of the way. Stream Crossings: nothing significant What’s it like? Flower Creek is a beautiful stream beginning in a couple of small lakes aptly named Sky Lakes. A broad basin opens up not far above the confluence of Hanging Valley Creek and gently rises to the base of triplet spires piercing the sky. Weir Peak (7,270 feet) is on the north, Sugarloaf Mountain (7,566 feet) dominates the center of the skyline and an unnamed peak rises to over 7,700 feet to the southwest. The rugged scenery is some of the best in the Cabinets. The trail ends at lower Sky Lake but it is a relatively easy climb to the smaller upper Sky Lake. On a bench above the northeast corner of the lake, amidst a stand of scattered alpine larch, is an Engelmann spruce that exceeds 5 feet in diameter and could well be one of the largest spruces in the wilderness. Alpine larch is abundant in this high basin and makes for a colorful spectacle in the autumn. Camping: Good primitive camping opportunities exist at the lower lake. Alternate Hikes: A mile and a half from lower Sky Lake, Trail 360 splits off from Trail 137 and ties in with Trail 317 to Minor Lake or goes to Dome Mountain and Cedar Lakes. A fabulous off-trail hike beginning at upper Sky Lake leads over the ridge between Sky Lakes and Hanging Valley, then follows Trail No. 135 back to Flower Creek. The Parmenter tie-in Trail No. 15 begins at the Flower Creek trailhead and connects with Parmenter Creek Trail No. 140 after about 2 miles.
