This book describes an understanding of human emotional functioning refined over centuries. Just as Ayurvedic or Chinese medicine has been refined over centuries, this understanding speaks deeply to the human condition. The Great Hoop of Life: Volume 2, The Emotions on the Wheel addresses traditional concepts which help us understand how strong emotions develop and the choices that we have. Learn how to identify your resistance, and how to cooperate with your circumstance. As one example, difficulty with the first step around the wheel, Being Who You Are, can lead to anger expressed as pridefulness, or fear expressed as shyness and self-doubt. Paula shares specific methods to move towards appropriate unity, towards taking responsibility for ourselves, reaching towards possibilities of cooperation and leading to increasing peace of mind and increasing serenity. The Great Hoop of Life: Volume 2, The Emotions on the Wheel further describes chronic conditions, such as anxiety, sadness and pain: how these conditions develop and continue, and specific methods to counteract this condition and begin to change the energy to enthusiasm, eagerness and joy. The flow of emotional energy is clearly described. Paula Underwood's grandfather's grandmother was trained as a healer, growing up in a traditional Oneida community in Pennsylvania in the early 1800s. Tsilikomah completed training as a healer of the physical body before undertaking the extensive training necessary to heal the mind and spirit. This training was similar in extent to completing medical degrees as both a physician and a psychiatrist. The information in this volume reflects this intensive training in traditional understanding of emotional health. The Sevenfold Flowering of Completeness is a traditional planning tool for gathering information and refining possibilities. When you use this structure, it can give you a greater depth of understanding. It can move you in the direction of a deeper, more fully dimensional understanding of your circumstance. The Great Hoop is elaborated in multi-dimensional space. This elaboration encourages appreciation of wholeness while allowing for the possibility of focus. This is an explanation of the geometric shapes that underlay our experience, with the intention of permitting us to perceive the patterns that are constantly emerging, coalescing, dying and re-emerging all around us, all the time. The ultimate purpose of the wheel is to unify wholeness and sequence, coming to a broader understanding. This elaboration leads to a discussion of the Seven Directions. Finally, Paula Underwood shares her family understanding of The Great Tree of Peace. The Great Tree of Peace is one name for the Constitution of the Iroquois League of Nations. At one time, there was such unity under this Great Tree that the League reached from the Hudson to the Mississippi. This Constitution, the trunk of the Great Tree is seen as uniting earth and sky. To the extent that you nurture this Great Tree, the roots will grow and the branches will spread. And one day all Earth's children will be able to shelter under a Great Tree dedicated to Peace.

About the Author:

Paula Underwood was the Native American author of several award-winning books and contributor to numerous publications. Paula focused on creative change through the application of an ancient Native American methodology for learning, organization, and health. A speaker, lecturer, and teacher, Paula was also the Founder and Director of The LearningWay company, and developer of a nationwide educational program -The Past is Prologue - used by learning organizations from elementary levels through gradate classes, in corporations, and organizational training. The educational program based on her work has been declared "Exemplary" by the U.S. Department of Education. Her first book Who Speaks for Wolf has won four awards, including the Thomas Jefferson Cup for quality writing. It has been called "the best book I know of on systems thinking." Paula was consistently praised for her ability to apply Ancient and enduring American Indian Wisdom to the apparent chaos of rapid change. Paula’s grandfather's grandmother didn’t intend to be the Keeper of the Old Things. She lived in an Oneida community in Pennsylvania in the early 1800s. She was a healer who was given a patient she found to be dying of grief. He had been unable to find a Learner to whom he could pass responsibility for the Old Things. Tsilikomah began learning the Old Things just to heal her patient. One day, her community was attacked by a neighboring tribe and she saw her patient’s life threatened. Tsilikomah saw how close we came to losing his wisdom forever. Since that time, Paula’s family has continued to hold responsibility for this material. Paula shared her grandmother's deep understanding of emotional healing in the book The Great Hoop of Life, Volume 2: Further Learnings on a Traditional Medicine Wheel for Understanding Emotions.
