The author recounts her childhood growing up on a farm in northern New York

Buyukmihci reminisces about her childhood on a farm. Days spent planting with her grandfather, picking fruits and gardening on her mother's farm, and, finally, working with her horses skidding logs for neighbors. These warm, colorful memoirs demonstrate how her lifelong affection for horses is rooted in her childhood. There is as much information conveyed about the characters of her beloved horses as her kin. Those animals left "hoofmarks in [her] heart that would never be erased" and lessened the pain of her parents' separation and the financially trying conditions she shared with her mother and brothers.
