Don't be fooled by the subtitle; this book is more than a canine travelogue. Much more. While the author does pay homage to her adopted city of many years, the true object of her affection is Lauren, an infinitely lovable, chronically ill beagle. In this wonderful tale, Pfaltz chronicles her life with Lauren on both sides of the Atlantic, making no bones about the depth of their relationship. Lauren's Story is my favorite sort of animal book-- one that details a loving bond that enriches the reader's life almost as much as thelives of the dog and person involved.

For anyone who has ever loved a dog, LAUREN'S STORY is a must. If you have a dog you love; if you ever wanted a dog; if you sometimes feel yourself thinking,'Maybe I should get a dog,' read this book! t is tender, funny, unforgettable and impossible to put down. In today's sometimes dark world, Lauren's Story is a much needed and brilliant ray of light.
Chantal Westermann, ABC News"The more we love, the more we risk to lose and therefore stand to fear. But that's okay, for if we don't give our hearts away they shrivel up. I gave my heart away to a strange little dog and I know she'll break it when she dies. But the joy of these days and months and years spent in each other's company, strolling, eating, sleeping and just being will be worth the pain and a thousand times more."
The greatest gift I ever received was a strange little dog. Her name was Lauren. The first time I ever heard of Lauren I was in my apartment in Paris and my boyfriend of the minute had just broken up with me, for about the eighty-eighth time. My sister Amy had been telling me to get a dog, get a dog. She said it would ease the loneliness, and I'd have something to force me out of the apartment. A dog would be a constant companion she said. Amy got a dog whenever she got depressed. That was her answer to life's curve balls. She had eleven dogs.
