Froggie Froggette tries to become a bluebird but, after several failed attempts at chirping and flying, decides that she is better off as a frog after all

PreSchool-Grade 2?There is nothing special about this anthropomorphic tale of a frog who, recalling past metamorphoses, decides to become a bluebird. Because of this, she refuses to marry jolly Mr. Toad. Kind Mr. Bluebird takes Froggie under his wing and tries to teach her to fly. When she crashes to the ground after an unsuccessful test flight, Froggie agrees to marry Mr. Toad after all, vowing to remain a frog forever. Originally published in Spain, the wordy, heavy-handed translation approaches saccharinity. The pastel crayon and watercolor drawings are pleasant but repetitive; most of the scenes vary only in minor details. Jonathan London's "Froggy" books (Viking) are far more satisfying choices.?Denise E. Agosto, formerly at Midland County Public Library, TX
