Based on 20 years of research and development in a range of organizations
This revised and expanded edition of a classic text provides a comprehensive guide to understanding, developing, and using structured on-the-job training in a variety of training situations and organizational contexts. Jacobs defines S-OJT and provides a rationale based on the need to develop high levels of employee competence, or expertise, in the workplace. He then describes a six-step process used to design and implement S-OJT programs. The emphasis here is how S-OJT can be used for managerial training, technical training, and awareness training. The chapters in the final section describe how S-OJT has been used to achieve organizational and societal goals. Included in this section are discussions regarding S-OJT as an organizational change strategy, quality management, cross-cultural aspects, and workforce development.

Ronald L. Jacobs, Ph.D., is professor of workforce development and education at the Ohio State University. He has written nearly one hundred journal articles and book chapters on a range of human resource development topics, including human competence, employee development, and managing organizational change. In addition, he has edited two books, Planned Training on the Job (Sage, 2001) and Implementing On-the-Job Learning (ASTD, 2002). He is a frequent speaker at professional meetings and conferences. Ron is particularly known for his research and development work on structured on-the-job training, a term that he first introduced to the human resource development literature in 1987. Much of his research has been on determining the financial benefits of structured OJT, information that is critical for making more informed training investment decisions.
Ron has consulted extensively in both manufacturing and service organizations, having worked for numerous large organizations such as American Electric Power, General Motors, KLM Airlines, Abbott Laboratories, Seagate, and Rohm and Haas. He has presented and consulted inter- nationally in Taiwan, South Korea, Egypt, Brazil, Mexico, Germany, Italy, Slovenia, Singapore, the Netherlands, and Kuwait, among other countries. Ron has taught at Utrecht University, the Netherlands, and held a distinguished visiting professorship at the School of Business, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore.
"In our service-driven bank environment, line managers must have well-trained employees to meet the needs of customers. This is a challenge for managers and the HRD function. This book addresses this issue head-on, and will likely become an essential part of our managers' human resource tool kit."
"Most people get trained on-the-job anyway, so why not save a ton of money and do the training right? Jacobs and Jones show us how to do it by providing easy-to-understand information and guidance. Certain to be the standard for training managers who want to get the most impact while capturing the expertise of employees already on the payroll."
