Synopsis
The ASL & Deaf Culture Activity Series takes an innovative approach to the teaching and learning of American Sign Language and Deaf culture. Rather than separating language practice and culture learning into unrelated goals, this series introduces students to an in-depth examination of a Deaf culture topic through activities emphasizing language comprehension and production.
Following the format of the national standards for foreign language learning, students engage in language and culture-rich activities emphasizing communication, cultural perspectives, interdisciplinary learning, comparing languages and cultures, and developing life-long enjoyment of ASL and Deaf culture. This dynamic approach fosters strengthened ASL skills while deepening understanding and appreciation of Deaf culture.
