From the Author:

This is my first children's book. I decided to write a story on a character who was different. I wrote this book especially for children who were born with a birth defect and for children who find themselves different in any way - heavier, skinnier, taller or shorter. I think this book will be helpful to children as well as adults, letting them know that there is nothing wrong with being different. I think this book will also provide encouragement in letting children who are from different ethnic backgrounds know that they are just as good as anyone else.

We as parents should take a stand in explaining these issues to our children. We have to expose them to handicaps and deformities in others and teach them that it is not nice to point and stare. When a child comes across a person who is physically-challenged in any way, we should take them to the library and let them read about why the person is this way - why is this person unable to walk or why is their hair missing or why are they unable to speak.

There is so much hurt in this world today and I'm hoping that my book will be one small step towards healing and will be meaningful to others.

From the Back Cover:

Gavendy's color makes him different from the rest of the mice. He becomes friends with a rabbit with no tail, a rabbit who is different from all the other rabbits. The story is a timely one for children. At an early age they learn to recognize and value diversity.

Gavendy - The Little Red Mouse was illustrated by Michael Andreas. Our concept was to create simple cartoon art for the rabbit and mice with greater emphasis and focus on the color rather than anatomical accuracy, which is consistent with the perception of younger children.
