Grade 3-5-A multicultural look at the calendar. Factual information about five holiday observations around the world is presented along with a story in which a child has a problem that is resolved in the course of a typical family celebration. New Year's celebrations include a story about a Japanese girl who worries that a flaw in the kimono she has sewn will be noticed. Mahmood temporarily loses his little brother in a crowded market in Pakistan while shopping for Eid-ul-Fitr, the new moon feast at the end of Ramadan. National holidays are exemplified by a story of a Namibian boy whose pride in his tribal costume overcomes his desire to wear his new Michael Jackson shirt in the Independence Day parade. The Three Sisters are actually the corn, beans, and squash in the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) creation myth told to a girl by her Native American godmother as they prepare Thanksgiving dinner. Rosa's jealousy of her older sister vanishes when she is selected to carry the figure of baby Jesus in the Las Posadas Christmas Eve parade. Black-and-white photographs often lacking contrast and unattractive, sketchy illustrations appear throughout. This book, while not outstanding, is suitable for supplemental classroom reading as it provides information not readily available elsewhere for this age group.
