Gr 3-5-Above-average historical fiction, set in 1775. Emily Parker lives in Boston, a city occupied by British soldiers. While many people, like the Parkers, are Patriots, there are plenty of Loyalists around, including their neighbors, the Babcocks. Robert Babcock, 18, however, claims to be a Patriot, but Emily suspects him of being a spy. The plot revolves around a secret, coded note informing General Washington of the transport of cannon from Fort Ticonderoga to Framingham and Emily and Robert's role in delivering the message. The characters are quickly and finely drawn; Emily is intelligent, but her actions are true to an 11 year old. The mood of suspense is sustained throughout. The style is simple and the dialogue appropriate to the times. Simple black-and-white illustrations are expressive, and period details enhance the story. Its easy-to-read text and large type should appeal to students and may stimulate an interest in this time period.-Katrina Yurenka, Brookfield Free Public Library, VT
