This is a truly monumental work: when complete, the projected 24-volume set will cover more than 100,000 international re cording sessions by 500,000 musicians, ranging from 1898 through 1992 and beyond and from 78s to CDs. One volume is scheduled for release every three months, with two volumes currently available. Each of these easy-to-read books runs approximately 600 pages, with alphabetical listings for musicians and their sessions that include album name, group name, session players, recording location and date, and tune names. The set will include separate musician and tunes indexes when complete. If it's recorded jazz, it's in here (or will be). For pure breadth, nothing else compares, save Walter Bruyninckx's 19-volume 60 Years of Recorded Jazz, 1917-1977 (Oaklawn Bks., 1977. o.p.) or Brian Rust's two-volume Jazz Records, 1897 - 1942 ( LJ 10/1/78. o.p.). This work is essential for all serious jazz music collections.
