About the Author

Jerry Fottral is a programmer, potter, and amateur pomologist. He has a BA degree in East Asian Languages and Literature from the University of Iowa. Jerry has been programming for more than 25 years and has taught computer courses for 19 years. He has been a computer programming instructor at Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, for 17 years and, for the past 7 years, has taught AS/400 programming classes. Jerry is also an independent AS/400 consultant. He lives with his family on a small orchard near Swisher, Iowa.

Mastering the AS/400, Third Edition introduces fundamental AS/400 concepts using a pragmatic, hands-on approach. This textbook prepares students to move directly into programming language, database management, and system operation courses.

The book emphasizes comprehensive understanding and skills in the areas of system/user interface, member-object-library relationship, use of CL commands, basic database concepts, and program development utilities. Students learn how to:

work with different screen types run CL commands from the command line and with prompting tailor library lists change their user profiles use PDM and SEU to create database-file source members coded in DDS insert and update using DFU and SQL generate screen displays and printed reports using Query/400 design menus and display screens with SDA code, compile, and execute CL programs

Mastering the AS/400, Third Edition stresses student participation, where understanding comes from doing. Each lesson includes related lab exercises that ask questions and describe notable features along the way. When all the lab exercises have been completed, students will have created a complete, personalized working environment that includes an initial program, current library, output queue, and source physical files.
