Synopsis

Below the Rim: Footsteps through the Grand Canyon is taken from a personal journal of the author's most memorable backpacking trips into the depths of the Grand Canyon in Arizona. The pages of the book vividly describe the Canyon and its animals and plants as only an artist could do. In addition, the daily routines and the author's adventures on the Canyon's many trails provide a good descriptive picture of life in the Canyon away from the civilization above the rim.

The trips described in the book span a 25-year period and are recounted as a journal, day by day. Most of the major trails in the Canyon are covered by the trips selected for this book. Not only will experienced Canyon hikers be able to relive their own adventures, but those who have never been in the Canyon can get to know it through a reading of the book's pages.

The author's watercolors of the flora and fauna of the Canyon illustrate the book's 160 page, as do a number of maps of the trails.

About the Author

The Colorado Rockies have always been home to the author. It was her eldest son, one of the "faithful threesome" of this book, who many years ago first introduced Dottie to hiking in the high country. Hiking then became a vital part of her life and she became fascinated with exploring the Southwest canyon country on foot. Dottie lives in a little solar house on a sunny hillside in Old Snowmass, Colorado. She is an environmental activist and a professional artist specializing in watercolors of the mountains, canyons, rivers and vast spaces of her beloved West. These activities have fine-tuned her powers of observation and sensitivity, which are strongly reflected in the pages of this book.
