9781882701292: The Promise of God: God's Unchangeable Purpose Through Human History

The Promise of God demonstrates that there is a unified plan to the whole of the Old Testament that has a precise fit with the New Testament. The author emphasizes one great theme: the promise that flows like a mighty river through all of God's dealings with the human race.

From the Back Cover:

It is a pleasure to commend to the reader this most succinct, but detailed guided study of the Old Testament. The Promise of God: God's Unchangeable Purpose through Human History meets a real need in that it demonstrates quite conclusively that there is a unified plan to the whole of the testament that has a precise fit with the New Testament as well. Few have packed so much in so little space with such good judgment on what to include. - Walter C. Kaiser

Review:

It is a pleasure to commend to the reader this most succinct, but detailed guided study of the Old Testament. The Promise of God: God's Unchangeable Purpose through Human History meets a real need in that it demonstrates quite conclusively that there is a unified plan to the whole of the testament that has a precise fit with the New Testament as well. Few have packed so much in so little space with such good judgment on what to include.
In choosing the theme of the "promise-plan" of God in the Old Testament, George Bristow has followed a similar theme that I have been emphasizing in my own teaching at the college and graduate theological seminary level. Not only is the theme of the "promise" one of the most promising integrating concepts of the whole Bible, it is the one that the writers of Scripture appear to espouse themselves, and the one that yields the highest dividends on the meaning and current relevance of the Bible.
The study of each chapter along with the suggested readings and study questions at the conclusion of each chapter, will yield one of the most exciting adventures that any person committed to the truth of Scripture could ever imagine.
All too many believers today have forgotten how rooted their faith is in the whole of the canon and history of Scripture. Without an understanding of the Old Testament, the believer is left without any roots, suspended in mid air, and without any meaningful context in which to ground his or her faith. But that condition will cease to exist once one has gotten into the study of this book.
May each one who opens the covers of this book experience the joy of his or her life in one of the most fascinating investments of their time that one could recommend. And may the power of the Word of God grip each one in a new and living way to the honor and glory of our great God and Saviour Jesus Christ.
- Walter C. Kaiser, Jr. Colman M. Mockler Distinguished Professor of Old Testament Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary (from the Preface)
