About the Author

Award winning garden writer and naturalist Sharon Lovejoy is the author and illustrator of three books that introduce children to nature through gardening. Her most recent book is ROOTS, SHOOTS, BUCKETS & BOOTS: Gardening Together with Children by Workman Publishing. Her other books include Sunflower Houses: Inspiration from the Garden (Workman 2001) and Hollyhock Days: Garden Adventures for the Young at Heart (1994).

In addition to her own books, Ms. Lovejoy contributed to Growing Fruits and Vegetables Organically (Rodale Press), Potpourri and Fragrant Crafts (Reader’s Digest), The Herb Tea Book (Interweave Press), and Herb Drying Handbook (Altamont Press).

Since 1993, Ms. Lovejoy has written and illustrated a regular feature column as a Contributing Editor for Country Living GARDENER magazine. Her work has also appeared in Northern New England Journey, Edible Gardens (American Express Publishing), Woman’s Day, Family Life, Country America, The American Horticulturist, The Herb Companion, Ranger Rick, People, Places and Plants, and Land’s End catalog.

Ms. Lovejoy has been a consultant for the Reader’s Digest Association and a children’s garden design consultant for the Red Butte Botanical Gardens in Salt Lake City, the Cleveland Botanical Gardens in Ohio, and the Bay Area Discovery Museum in San Francisco. In 1996, she was chosen to design the Children’s Gardening Pavilion for the highly respected Cincinnati Flower and Garden Show. Recently, the American Horticultural Society invited her to their National Children and Youth Garden Advisory Panel.

In 1999 and 2001, she received the prestigious Quill and Trowel Award from Garden Writers Association of America (GWAA) for her magazine writing. For her contributions to education, she received the Key to the City of Indianapolis, Indiana, and the Gold Leaf Award from the Santa Clara Department of Education at the Kindergarten Forum in Saratoga, California. Her writings continue to be reprinted in educational publications in English and Spanish.

Her Quaker grandmother, a botanist and an educator, introduced her to the wonders of nature at an early age. Her passion for the natural world guided her to become a naturalist for the Morro Bay Museum of Natural History and for the Smithsonian Institution in the lagoons of Baja, California. As a graduate with Distinction in the Field of Art from San Diego State University, Ms. Lovejoy successfully combines her training in art with her love of botany and natural science.

She has lectured throughout the United States for over twenty years at conferences, educational symposia, museums, botanic gardens, arboreta, public and private educational institutions, and for professional trade associations and gardening organizations. As a featured guest, Ms. Lovejoy and her books have appeared on NBC’s “Today Show” and on numerous shows on the Home and Garden Television (HGTV), The Discovery Channel, and PBS networks.

In 1995, Ms. Lovejoy served as President of the International Herb Association. Her other professional affiliations include Garden Writers Association of America, Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators, The Authors Guild, Inc., Maine Writers and Publishers Alliance, American Horticultural Society, and Herb Society of America.
