About the Author

Vincent A. Simeone is a horticulturist who teaches gardening classes and has assisted in garden tours in Canada, England, France, Germany, New Zealand, and South Africa. He is the manager of Planting Fields Arboretum State Historic Park in Oyster Bay, New York. Bruce Curtis has chronicled many of the significant events of the last decades of the 20th century as a photographer for LIFE, Sports Illustrated, and Time. He lives in Albertson, New York.

Exfoliating bark of varied hues peels away from tree trunks like the unfurled petals of spring flowers. For those who view gardening as a fair-weather activity, Simeone eloquently extols the virtues of the garden in the fourth season of the year. Some plants are meant to shine gloriously only under the summer sun; knowing which ones like to strut their stuff when the snow flies is the trick to creating a garden of chilly delight.
