About the Author:

The rivers, lakes and wetlands of northern Minnesota and Ontario were the place that James Kasperson realized his love for the earth. Throughout his life this love has grown, especially during the years he has lived on the shore of the great lake, Superior. He is an ordained minister in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. He has served in rural congregations and outdoor ministries in northern Minnesota ,Wisconsin and Alaska. In that time he has gathered stories from the lives he has encountered, and the land upon which he has traveled. In his first book, More Teaching Kids to Love the Earth, published by Pfeifer-Hamilton in 1994, he shared stories of being in relationship with the earth. Little Brother Moose is his first children's book. He is a musician, poet and storyteller. He uses these talents in leading environmental and spiritual workshops for families, teachers and children throughout the Upper Midwest.

From School Library Journal:

Grade 1-3?This simple natural history tale follows a young moose as he wends his way along a river and wanders out of the countryside into a road filled with passing vehicles and then into a town. After a night and day of quiet confusion, he spots geese flying overhead, pointing the way home. Softly illuminated watercolor scenes fill the pages, following the snowy wanderings of the clumsy-looking calf. However, the slow-paced account may deter some readers, and the animal's anthropomorphized thoughts don't ring true. "Moss listened to this voice when he made his decisions." Repeated references to "the voice" are a bit puzzling in context. This might be an euphemism for instinct, but Kasperson indicates a more mystical idea in a final page of comments explaining his didactic concerns. "The voice of the earth is the voice of life for our world." The artist is more adept at shaping material in the picture-book format; well-composed illustrations are inviting and capably convey setting and story. The idea here is good, but the book needs a tighter construction and focus.?Margaret Bush, Simmons College, Boston
