At a time when poets often write for other poets rather than for common readers, Ruth F. Boorstin's collection Love Is Not Because is refreshing and invigorating. Many of its selections have appeared elsewhere; Boorstin often contributes to the Wall Street Journal's "Salt and Pepper" column, for instance. Here's her four-line poem "Inquiry to the IRS":
Children demand attention
Just when you feel like relaxing
How come, when they're deductible
That they can be so taxing?
Many of the poems in this enjoyable collection deal with love, marriage, and home life, all of which Boorstin shares with historian Daniel J. Boorstin, but she deals with other topics as well. She offers, for example, some "Political Advice":
With endless opinions
The media is bloated:
Silence is the only thing
That can't be misquoted.
