This volume, Pulpit and Pew, discussions on conflict in the Lord's house, is the author's attempt to verbalize some of the conditions affecting community among the people of God in Christ. The reader, it is hoped, will see in the several vignettes some of their own experiences and involvements. And fromn reading find, both, some answers that are workable in their situations and where needed provide incentives for individuals to change, or to become agents of change. Running through this book is the belief that God's intention for creation is community. In a proximate way the church reflects and represents that community. Within the church are friends and foes of community. Pulpit, my way of speaking of the Pastor, is positioned as the leader of Pew, my way of reffering to members, indiviudally and collectively. This approach takes seriously the several gifts bestowed by the Spirit upon the ordained and the unordained for ministry. From the mix of gifts Pulpit is set apart and not above for oversight of the entire congregation. Pew is called to ministry but is not given oversight of the whole people of god in that one place. Pulpit and Pew are members of the body of Christ and together are responsible for maintaining its unity. My prayer is that all of us will become more intentional in our concern for the negative influences and effects of conflict. Likewise, I pray that our resolve to act will be strengthened.
