Alvy, director of the Center for the Improvement of Child Caring (CICC), writes about the necessity for parent training on a universal basis. He sets out the parameters of three parent-training programs: Parent Effectiveness Training (PET), Systematic Training for Effective Parenting (STEP), and his own, Confident Parenting. The three are compared in detail. Confident Parenting has learned a good deal from the gaps in the other programs and even includes specialized training for African American, Latino, and Native American families. The writing style and the depth of the discussion are aimed at social workers and other professionals more than at parents, but individuals can benefit from the groundwork presented here.
