Eye from the Edge brings you to an American melting pot with sizzle and swing. In the wartime 1940s the Oakland Port waved farewell to soldiers and sailors and welcomed laborers for the rail yards and the shipyards located at the edge of our North American continent. Streetcars, motorcycles, city slickers and shoppers mix with music and aromas while a group of boys cycle along the edge of the San Francisco Bay. Read about this multiculture-rich neighborhood; dance the salsa and swing; meet Pedro infante, or Guadalupe Carlos in La Ideal Music Shop on Seventh St. See the big hearts of boxers like Carl Bobo Olson and the early church leaders like Father Philipps at St. Mary's. Read what Ruben hears in his dad's barbershop while he shines shoes. Follow him through a retail business career and a successful marriage (which his wife Anita helps describe). Read of music that brings the young people together, no matter their heritage. Picture the Mexican territory that Ruben's parents left during troubles of 1910 and Pancho Villa. Follow their journey across the border with their documents in their hands. Admire their enduring spirit with La Ideal Music Shop and hear the tales of this great melting pot. If you grew up in the SF Bay Area, let yourself go nostalgic --enjoy this easy to read life story, take the A Train from Oakland to Laffin' Sal across the bay through the City on the Pacific Ocean. Laugh at the antics of the young teenagers and marvel at Ruben's motivation and success, marrying and working after high school and learning on the job. Remember your own journey, your own people. See how working hard ties in with lively music and sports, and family. Enjoy the read!

About the Author:

Ruben Llamas was born in pre-World War II, Oakland, California to hardworking, enterprising parents from Mexico. From family life above his dad's music and barbershop, plus his own years of retail work, Ruben shows a respect for hard work and a drive toward success. Ruben marries his high school sweetheart and they begin a journey that continues to this day after more than 55 years. Ruben's description of his urban adventures, his memory of his days at the parish school and church and the various places he worked in Oakland will give the reader a few laughs while we admire the work ethic that brought him and Anita to success. Today Ruben and Anita reside in Sacramento County near their three boys and families. Overcoming their share of difficult times (that you barely find in this memoir) this author has enjoyed life and portrays an example for many who may aspire to the American dream.

Review:

. . . .the story and scenes actually brought me back to my own home town, my own family, and my own friends. This is a real memoir of a true American with appeal that will definitely hold the readers' attention. --Amy Lignor, best-selling author of Tallent & Lowery 13

It was great to learn more about my wife's Mexican heritage and how her family carved out a new life for themselves in the U. S. They desired that their children get an excellent education, get a steady, well-paying job, and raise good citizens. --Richard Hanson, professor emeritus, university of Rhode Island

There was much in the book that touched my heart. It is an interesting and important story about a Mexican family and growing up in Oakland, California, with all the people who moved to the Bay Area from around the United States and other countries to improve the lives of their families. --Alma Hanson, retired elementary school teacher

. . .enjoyed it, always so interesting to see different side of California cultural heritage and life from another perspective.. . . an Artist and Book Club member, Sacramento
