Grade 1-4. A piece of Bible fiction peripherally related to Christmas. Japeth, the young son of one of the Magi, is left at home when his father goes off to follow the star that will lead him to the Messiah. After his father has been gone a long time, Japeth is questioned by two Roman soldiers. They are looking for a wise man who had stopped to see King Herod on the way to find the Christ Child but had never reported back as ordered. That betrayal caused many newborns to be slaughtered and has put the man's life in danger. Having learned from his father's words and examples, Japeth confuses the soldiers enough so they leave him alone, but he fears for the worst. But he trusts in God, and his father comes home to tell him of the wonder at seeing the Messiah. The lengthy text, told in formal language, weaves Christian theology and Biblical history into the familiar story. The stiff and awkwardly drawn artwork adds little to the presentation.
