This anthology of non-Western literature meets its goal of balancing "the Eurocentric emphasis in literary studies." The stories, poems, and excerpts are in English, with 61 countries grouped into five geographic regions and translations from 23 languages offered. There is an excellent bibliography, an author/title index, and helpful indexes by theme, country, and genre. Though some of the authors are well known (Borges, Soyinka, Naipaul), most are not known outside their cultures. Each work is preceded by a brief biographical sketch and concludes with a set of study/research questions. As its editors (CUNY) point out, the selections are appropriate for international studies programs as well as literature classes. Teachers working in cross-cultural studies will certainly find this pioneering and unique textbook very useful.?Peter A. Dollard, Alma Coll. Lib., Mt. Pleasant, Mich.
