Grade 2 Up?Aurora Wetzel, a very talented narrator, reads with spirit and distinction. She has chosen here five less familiar stories from Hans Christian Andersen's Twelve Tales (Macmillan, 1994), translated by Erik Blegvad: "The Shepherdess and the Chimney Sweep," "The Pixie at the Grocer's," "The Sweethearts," "The Tinderbox," and "Twelve by Coach." Wetzel's readings are storytelling in the purest form with no sound effects or background music, but she easily distinguishes one character from the others with vocal inflections and characterizations. "The Tinderbox," due to its length and complicated plot, may not have the same appeal to younger children as "The Sweethearts" with its story of friendship between two toys. This recording can stand alone on car trips or in classrooms, or it can be used as a read-along if one has a copy of the book.
