DELTA’S KEY OPENS NEW DOORS
Nancy Gallagher’s hugely successful Key to the TOEFL Test is a hard act to follow, but follow it she has by sticking to the winning formula of packing loads of practice material into a simply presented and easy-to-follow format for lower level students.
Delta’s Key to the TOEFL Test Basic Course is an introduction to the TOEFL for students currently in the 400500 TOEFL score range (90170 on the computer test). It is divided into 35 units which provide instruction, practice, and class activities in the four skill areas tested: listening, grammar, reading, and writing. Practice questions cover essential TOEFL content and are similar to the easier questions on the actual test. Instruction includes examples of all computerunique question types and strategies for both the computerbased and paperbased tests. The text and cassettes are suitable for classroom, laboratory, or independent study.
The book is based on the five-part unit for language acquisition, so each skill unit has a Focus section which stimulates the learner to identify a relevant principle, a Do you know...? section which provides instruction in one of the four tested skill areas, a Practice section where students apply their recently acquired skills to TOEFL-like questions, an Extension section with ideas for classroom activities to reinforce skills, and a Progress section where assessments are made through timed quizzes.
In addition to the skill units, there are Section Tests, Sample Essays and two full-length Tests, both of which contain questions corresponding to the easier sections of TOEFL—one is similar to the computer-based TOEFL and the other reflects the paper-based test.
Delta’s Basic Key makes students feel relaxed by familiarizing them with the TOEFL format and through its comprehensive coverage of the basic skills tested. As a teacher, I particularly like the clear layout which reminds me of the wonderful For Dummies series. This will be a great resource for any teacher with intermediate level TOEFL students.
