Echoes of Topsail is a story about Topsail Island, NC, its facts, folklore and heartbeat, voiced by its people who gave it life over the years. Those who live here speak with reverent whisper about the magic that caught them and will not let them leave.
This magic is the heartbeat of Topsail - slow and steady - that never misses a beat despite hammering by the wind, nudging by ocean surf, and ravaging by man. We come to the island and fall into the slow, throbbing beat, becoming it, even on a short stay. Like the loggerhead, we keep coming back.
Topsail Island is a metaphor for life. It is ever changing and yet, stays the same. If we pay attention, we can learn from Topsail how to enjoy life's journey.

Echoes of Topsail is my labor of love to understand the mystique of Topsail Island and document it for those of us intrigued by this special place.
I have invested over seven years in this examination and confidently believe this history accurately represents Topsail Island and its life from its beginnings to the 1990s.
There are several fables that I will have proved to be overstated: - There was no tunnel from the Assembly Building to the ocean launch pad. - The Gold Hole was not a flimflam effort where the perpetrators stole away in the night with the treasure. - Topsail Island was not so named during pirate days.
This account of stories and personal experiences should delight the reader with a picture of Topsail Island's origins, disasters, and developments that tested many souls and gave many of us personal joy.About the Author:
Born and raised in an Ohio town with a population of 350, David Stallman learned the rigors of farm work and house painting from his father. After college and two years in the military, Mr. Stallman was employed by IBM as a service engineer. His satisfying career with IBM spanned 33 years as he advanced to program management staff which included technical writing. Soon after his retirement, the author wrote and published several articles about his motorcycle tours in the west.
His love of Topsail Island began in 1986 when he went to visit a friend. All of his childhood dreams of living on an island were quickly realized when he purchased a cottage, renovating it for year-round use. He immediately became involved in the quest to preserve the island's historic buildings which brought him back to the island numerous times. He quickly became acquainted with many of the island's residents and feels very much a part of the Topsail community.
As his research progressed, he made many presentations of his findings, including a talk on Camp Davis at the North Carolina World War II Symposium. Mr. Stallman published many articles on island history which became seeds for Echoes of Topsail. This is an island first.
