From the Back Cover:

What bird is named for a place where it doesn't even exist?*

What bird found in Bermuda and New Zealand, is sometimes blindfolded in order to make it sing better?**

What bird has been said to have discovered the earth?***

These questions and thousands like them are answered in Eleanor Stickney's A Little Bird Told Me So: Birds in Mythology and History. "Based on the belief that birds had their own language and could give information to people," A Little Bird Told Me So explores and exposes the mysteries and myths, the facts, fallacies and folklore behind birds and their relationship to man.

From the tube-nosed Albatross -- who ancient sailors used to kill in order to fashion tobacco pouches out of their webbed feet -- to the girdle-eyed Zosterops, this bird's-eye vie to life in and out of the nest is as colorful as the plumage on a Painted Bunting. Illustrator John Maisano's whimsical sketches lend a touch of artistic depth to the text, enhancing the reader's visual appreciation of the subject. Eleanor Stickney's guide is sure to please lovers of our feathered friends everywhere.

* Curassow ** Goldfinch *** Blue Jay

About the Author:

Eleanor Stickney's enthusiasm for birds hatched from her great, great uncle, who was one of the founders of the American Ornithologists Union, and her grandfather, who was an amateur ornithologist. Mrs. Stickney majored in ornithology at Sarah Lawrence College and worked at the American Museum of Natural history. Along with S. Dillon Ripley, she founded the Peabody Museum Associates and was its first President. She also spent 30 years as Collections Manager of the Bird Department at Yale University's Peabody Museum of Natural History.

Mrs. Stickney, now retired, still gives frequent, sought after lectures on ornithology. She and her husband presently reside in Essex, Connecticut.
