Introduction Welcome to Bootblacking 101. This is meant as a general overview of what it takes to shine boots properly. It also explores bootblacking as a fetish, and as a mindset. Not everyone who reads this text will want to run out and purchase the necessary equipment and apply at their local leather bar to shine boots for strangers. Some will just want to know the basics, in order to please a relationship partner with an impressive boot shine. Some might just want to know how to keep their own boots in better shape. But some will want to take it to the next step, to learn not only the basics and the “how-to” but the “why-to,” “when-to” and “who you are as a bootblack.” This book is for both those who want only the basics and those who want a thorough understanding of bootblacking and bootblacks. A friend of mine, a true mentor, once told me that “serving is not self-gratifying. Don’t get into teaching or writing for you, but for the world.” Mike McDade, better known as SLAVEMASTER, could not have put it better. The proceeds from this publication will be donated to the Leather Archives and Museum in Chicago, International Mr. Bootblack Travel Fund and other bootblack related charities. For the archives, their’s is a project that works to preserve the past. This is my small contribution to that goal. There are memories written within these pages that are now preserved. I couldn’t ask for a better reason to write this book. There is no well-kept secret about bootblacking. There will be no scandalous revelations that bootblacks have hidden over the years about their skill. Knowing how to properly shine boots is a very useful, if not easy, skill to possess. A good bootblack can make it all seem easy, but make no mistake; learning it correctly takes time and doing. Even so, regardless of how easy it might seem, so many don’t seem to take the time to do it right. The great thing about bootblacking is that it isn’t limited to just your local leather bar. Bootblacking - and everything involved with it - can happen in a living room, a playroom, a dungeon, on a street corner, or at the foot of the bed on a Sunday morning. There is a reason I keep my portable bootshine chair in the living room; you never know when it might come in handy. Let’s get to it. Part One will explore the basic shine process.
