Section I Why Sleepnosis? Chapter One To begin, I would like you to consider holding an assumption or presupposition in your mind while you are reading this book. This presupposition is that your conscious mind has this idea that everything has to be knowable, consciously. In addition, whether you are reading this book because you have a problem or issue you would like to resolve, or you are reading this book to help someone else, one thing is consistent. Your conscious mind thinks it is going to learn something and put it to use. I say to this, maybe. Maybe, meaning if you could have already solved whatever problem(s) or issue(s) you are having consciously, you already would have and therefore would have no need to read this book. Because of the conscious mind’s need to control and place specific outcomes on the desired changes, not only how, but also when, where, with whom, in what order and in what context. The conscious mind also may or may not know how to generalize the changes so that the entire system can access the changes because the conscious mind did not think of that possibility at the time changes were occurring. With this statement I am also recognizing my responsibility to your conscious mind’s curiosity. And to that end, I am willing to provide evidence and proof with data, charts and worksheets. At the same, I am unwilling to tell your conscious mind everything I’m doing because your conscious mind doesn’t really need to know everything and your unconscious mind already recognizes the patterns and will utilize them to facilitate the desired changes, now. It’s possible that a dilemma that has always been there has floated to the surface. This is the dilemma of how much overt detail do I give to the conscious mind to satisfy curiosity while I give instructions to the unconscious mind about facilitating change? The best way to deal with it is to say what the dilemma is straight out, so here it goes: In general, if you are lucky enough to have symptoms, “the symptoms of your problem are the solution to your problem and the proposed solutions given by the conscious mind are contributing to the problem.” Got it? Well, you will. When I first started doing NLP and Hypnotic change work with clients in 1986, I was amazed how generally unwilling people were to ask for changes, and also were reticent to communicate to others that changes had occurred. I found this to be simply amazing and went on changing.
