Find the Doctors who will be best for your health.
Some doctors are much better than others. A New York State study of heart bypass surgery death rates revealed that some doctors who did large numbers of surgeries had more than five times the death rates other doctors had. Other studies have made similar findings.
Doctor-to-Doctor quality differences mean that choosing the wrong doctor might expose you to surgery, powerful drugs, or other treatments that will do you no good, might do you lasting harm, and will certainly contribute to discomfort and inconvenience. By choosing the wrong doctor, you might also miss out on a treatment that could cure a disease or repair an injury, or you might get the treatment you need but have it performed so badly that it does you no good. In short, choice of the wrong doctor can result in needless suffering, or even death.
In this book, you get the information you need to choose the right doctors. The book is a special publication of the Center for the Study of Services, a nonprofit research organization widely respected for 25 years of producing consumer-oriented evaluations of hospitals, health plans, and other health care providers.

Consumers CHECKBOOK/The Center for the Study of Services is an independent, nonprofit consumer organization founded in 1974 with the help of funding from the U.S. Office of Consumer Affairs. Our purpose is to provide consumers information to help them get high quality services and products at the best possible prices. We are supported entirely by subscription payments and donations from individual consumers who subscribe to our magazines, and by fees for our survey and information services and books. We do not accept donations from businesses and our publications carry no advertising. We publish Consumers CHECKBOOK magazine in seven local versions: in the Boston, Chicago, Delaware Valley, Puget Sound, San Francisco/Oakland/San Jose, Twin Cities, and Washington, DC, areas. CHECKBOOK evaluates the quality and prices of local service firms and stores, such as auto repair shops, plumbers, dentists, banks, and insurance companies. CHECKBOOK has won the National Press Club s prestigious First Place Award for Excellence in Consumer Journalism. The Center provides various kinds of help to consumers who want to buy or lease a new car. Check out our CarBargains and LeaseWise services which help consumers get great deals from new car dealers by making them bid competitively for your business. Another of our publications, CarDeals, is a bi-weekly newsletter detailing auto rebates and incentives offered by car manufacturers. In addition, the Center is busy in the health care arena, publishing national guides, including Guide to Health Plans for Federal Employees, Guide to Top Doctors, and Consumers Guide to Hospitals. These guides are available in book form and online.Review:
Finding a good doctor is essential to your health. Unfortunately, most consumers have little to go on. The Guide to Top Doctors is the most useful source of physician information. -- Stephen Brobeck, Executive Director, Consumer Federation of America
The Guide to Top Doctors does for consumers what I as a physician do myself - find out from my colleagues who the best doctors are. The Guide provides much- needed information for consumers and is a great place to start when trying to find a good doctor. --Haya Rubin, Ph.D, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine
