PreSchool-Grade 3-Although there are dozens of Bible storybooks, this one is outstanding because of its lively, conversational text that, while necessarily condensing the stories for its audience, retains authenticity and a fine storytelling tone. The Old Testament section is truncated: only the Creation, Adam and Eve, Noah, Joseph, David and Goliath, Daniel in the Lions' Den, and Jonah are included. The New Testament section is somewhat unusual as 5 of the 12 stories deal with Holy Week. This difficult material is presented in a simple, straightforward manner. The others cover the Nativity, the 12-year-old Jesus in the Temple, two parables (The Good Samaritan and The Prodigal Son), and two miracles (Jesus feeding the 5000 and walking on water). The narration is vivid and faithful to its source. The handsome format has an outstandingly varied and effective arrangement of text and pictures. The richly glowing watercolor illustrations are filled with expressive cartoon figures that exhibit personality, sweetness, and wit. Although limited in its coverage, the book is appealing in both its literary and artistic styles.

Ages 4^-7. Twenty of the best-known Bible stories from both the Old and the New Testaments are presented here in a format that will appeal to young children. The authors' story choices are appropriate for the age group, emphasizing kindness to one's neighbors and relating the miracles of Jesus healing the sick, feeding the hungry, and walking on water. A few stories do have some parts that may be scary for very young or sensitive children, but the overall tone of the book is upbeat and hopeful, as are Barger's bright and cheerful illustrations. In scenes that otherwise might be frightening--for example, when Daniel is thrown into the lions' den--the lighthearted style will help ease fears. The index, which is organized by theme, will aid adults wishing to find stories on a particular topic. Lauren Peterson
