Dr. Gail L. Denton, Ph.D., is both apsycholtherapist and a brain injury survivor. She wrote Brainlash to make sense of her own experience and so share what she learned along the way.
The condition called "brainlash" results from whiplash type actions to the brain in which tissue may be bruised or torn by the forces of the brain being whipped around inside the skull from such conditions as a sudden stop or blow. This force throws the neck and brain into hyperflexion (forward thrusting) and then hyperextention (pulling or rebounding) and/or lateral rotation. The consequential action translates powerful forces to the brain, skull and skeletal system resulting in unnatural, potentially destructive contact between these structures and the surrounding connective soft tissues. In approximately two-thirds of those affected, physical, emotional and thinking skills will return to baseline within an average of two weeks to three months. Many of the remaining third will take an average of a year to achieve the majority of their improvements. A small proportion will sustain residual deficits which will be permanent. Brainlash is highly recommended for anyone who has suffered mild traumatic brain injury and their caretakers and family members. Brainlash offers valuable information, insights, real help and practical advice for people living with the challenge of a new life with mild traumatic brain injury. Brainlash will prove invaluable for employers, support groups, health care providers, and legal representatives to better understand milid traumatic brain injury and recovery options. -- Midwest Book Review
