Gr 5-8--Two brothers, Will and Donnie, are Americans living with their family in Japan. The book tells of their trek up Mt. Fuji with their friend Mr. Sugahara, helping one another through the exhaustion of climbing all night long, and their eventual success. Will is hearing impaired and his father does not approve of the expedition, even though his son is a long-distance runner and physically fit. Although the plot is interesting, the story is poorly written. The author incorporates many Japanese words and puts the English translations in parentheses, which disrupts the narrative flow. The grammar and even the punctuation are flawed, and on one page a full sentence is repeated three paragraphs after it first appears. Benton tells a lot about the brothers instead of showing their personalities through their actions. The publisher states its commitment to provide children's literature that promotes understanding, compassion, and inclusion of people with differences. Despite its good intentions, this effort ultimately fails.
