REG Davis Washington DC 4 April 08" In the summer of 1933 a Soviet ship, the Chelyuskin had set off from European Russia with hopes of proving that a practical sea route was possible to the Russian Far East, via the Arctic Ocean and the Bering Strait.Unfortunately it was gripped by pack ice , forced back until in February 1934, it sank.104 people had unloaded supplies and equipment and had to abandon ship and set up camp. Back in Moscow the cry for help resulted in three separate units of planes were despatched by three different routes and in April 1934 all the shipwrecked survivors were rescued - the first time in history that shipwrecked castaways were saved by air.
