This adventurous book about a prototype train engine is exciting and educational. A tape of the book, narrated by LeVar Burton of PBS's Reading Rainbow, is included. The story begins with two children riding on the maiden run of The Torpedo, a slick new engine on its way to the 1939 World's Fair. The illustrations are colorful and reminiscent of the warm, family style of children's books in the 1930s and '40s. The accompanying taped narration features sound effects and three sing-along railroad songs. Another railroad story in this series with the same characters is The Daylight Limited. --Lee StruckerReview:
Based on the famous United States' railway engines of the late 1930s, this book and tape package follows the fictitious cross-country railway adventure of brother and sister duo, Tuck and Billie Holden. The narration by LeVar Burton is compelling. While the companion book's watercolor illustrations may seem old-fashioned to children, they'll look retro to their parents or teachers. Torpedo Run toy train sold separately. A 1999 Parents' Choice® Recommendation. (Parents' Choice®) -- From Parents' Choice®
