9781890772222: In the Shadow of Greatness: Five Remarkable Women Who Served the Genius of Another

This book features the lives of five strong, creative, intelligent women who dedicated their lives to serving the genius of others. Among fascinating friends, dramatic historic events and transcendent achievements, these women chose saintly self-effacement, emotional suffering, loneliness, and personal privation. WHY? -- Why choose to live in the shadow of greatness? -- What did each sacrifice? What did each gain? Because each woman's shadow efforts influenced the public persona of her partner, the author believes the key is in the opaqueness or transparency of the genius being served. Some geniuses are so obsessed-opaque- they are open to nothing outside themselves. Others are transparent to the work of their own genius -- a witness, not a slave. How this affects the shadow women is the focus of this book.

About the Author:

Michael Menager holds degrees in English and Applied Linguistics from California State U. and San Francisco State U. He has lived and taught in Algeria, Yugoslavia (Junior Fulbright Lecturer) and in the Bay Area, working with Asian war refugees. Extensively travelled, he migrated to Australia in 1987 to teach Aboriginals and migrants. He writes, studies, and performs music on the coast of New South Wales.

From Publishers Weekly:

Despite the title's sexist undertones, this book addresses some intriguing aspects of some of history's unknown heroines. The author, a mail carrier in Australia and a Fulbright scholar who speaks five languages, focuses on five women: Isabel Burton (wife of Sir Richard Burton), Maria Nhys (wife of Aldous Huxley), Francoise Gilot (lover of Pablo Picasso), Helen Dukas (employee of Albert Einstein) and Vera Slonim (wife of Vladimir Nabokov). In flowery prose (these women were "nurtured by the fierce light of genius"), Menager tells, for example, how Isabel Burton decided to burn her husband's papers, why Maria Nhys arranged extramarital affairs for her husband, and what made Gilot finally leave Picasso. It's an unusual and fairly specific way to approach biography, but may be of interest to readers captivated by the relationships between men and women in history.
