Emma Sepúlveda-Pulvirenti is a Professor of foreign languages and literatures at the University of Nevada, Reno, where she was the first Latina to be named a Foundation Professor. A native of Argentina who grew up in Chile and attended the University of Chile in Santiago until the coup d etat that deposed president Salvador Allende, Sepúlveda emigrated to the United States in 1974, earned her bachelor s and master s degrees at the University of Nevada, Reno, and a doctorate from the University of California, Davis. Sepúlveda has been a board member of more than 25 organizations. She was a member of the U.S. Senate Hispanic Task Force. In 1994, she became the first Latina to run for the Nevada Senate. Her work on behalf of Latinos locally, nationally and internationally has won her several honors, including the Thornton Peace Prize from the University of Nevada, Reno in 1993, and the Latina Woman of the Year Award in Literature, from the GEMS international television network, in 1997. Sepúlveda has authored or co-authored 18 books, including works of poetry, photography, literary criticism, textbooks, the autobiography, From Border Crossings to Campaign Trail: Chronicle of a Latina in Politics, and a book of testimonies, We, Chile: Personal Testimonies of the Chilean Arpilleristas. She shared a Peabody Award for Best Foreign Documentary in 1993 for her collaboration on Threads of Hope, about the Chilean Arpilleristas. In 2000, she received the Silver Pen Award, given to distinguished writers in Nevada, and in 2005 she was honored with the Nevada Governor s award Exellence in the Arts. She lives in Nevada, teaches at the University of Nevada Reno and continues to contribute a regular opinion column to the Reno Gazette-Journal.
