A.D. Winans was born and raised in San Francisco. He is a graduate of San Francisco State College (now University). He is the former editor and publisher of Second Coming Magazine and Press, a very active and important small press which published numerous journals, books, and anthologies in the '70s and '80s. He is also a member of PEN and The Academy of American Poets, and has had over 25 volumes of his own poetry published by numerous presses. An alternative press advocate, Mr. Winans worked for five years as an editor and writer for the San Francisco Art Commission, under the Federally-funded CETA program. In 1995, Mr. Winans took an early retirement from the U.S. Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights, where he was employed as an Equal Opportunity Specialist, investigating claims of discrimination against minorities, women, and the disabled.
