In this frank, moving and sometimes humorous memoir, Cohen describes not only his own struggles but the all-too-real stories of the kids from the gym. From the homeless girl ashamed to admit it, to the inspiring but heartbreaking story of a boy with sickle cell anemia, Cohen pulls no punches.

Author Marshall Cohen was a suburban kid who had attention deficit disorder before it had a name and was called the D-Minus boy. As an aimless young man, he battled depression and considered suicide. Working at his family's drug store in downtown St. Louis, Cohen one day approached a boy who came in from the nearby projects: I m opening a gym for kids... Cohen said. The boy lit up: Man, I always wanted muscles! Thus was born Lift for Life Gym. Twenty-five years later, it is now a successful charter school that has given city kids a place to gather, to work out, to find people who care about them.
