EXCERPTED FROM THE INTRODUCTION
BIRTH OF THE POWERTOOLS The PowerTools began as an impromptu speech given in 1999 to a diverse group of women at a business luncheon in Washington, DC. I gave the same speech to businesswomen in Los Angeles and then a more detailed version in Wellington, New Zealand. The reaction to the PowerTools was instantaneous and identical with each group of women, and I realized that my words were striking a universal chord.
Women?s heartfelt, emotional reactions to the PowerTools convinced me that I was articulating some of the issues that many of us struggle with as we build our businesses and live our lives. As I began to speak with more women in business around the world, the PowerTools gained definition and meaning.
HOW TO USE THIS BOOK This book contains information in several formats. Each chapter begins with a short story of a businesswoman to demonstrate the PowerTool. Then I share some of my personal experiences and observations that helped shape the PowerTool. Interspersed within each chapter are: E-QUOTES: Excerpts of e-mail conversations I?ve had with women in business. SHE READS:Must-read book lists with reviews written by women CEOs and presidents.
At the end of each chapter are: NUGGETS: Additional resource lists including books, videos, and web sites to enhance your use of the PowerTools. PERSONAL PROJECTS: Fun, unusual, or useful activities you can do or actions you can take to challenge yourself and get closer to achieving your real goals. POWERTOOLS CHECK LIST: A bulleted list of "takeaways," points to ponder and things to remember.
At the heart of this book are the stories of women in business who, like you and me, have multi-faceted lives and face personal and professional challenges on their way to success. Their stories are either examples of some aspect of a PowerTool or help to reinforce the PowerTool as a valid and useful strategy. At the end of the book, you will find a list of these women, along with information about their businesses and business web sites. Feel free to skip around or read chapters more than once. Ask your friends to join you in doing the Personal Projects. Clip out the PowerTools list and tack it onto your bulletin board or carry it in your wallet. Get online and visit the recommended sites, then e-mail them to a woman you know. Don?t just read this book experience it! Claim the PowerTools for your own. Use them. Spread them around. Start a revolution in your business and in your life!
