About the Author:

An Encounter with Rick Medina

arrived on earth... 1964 in California

sightings... Utah, Arizona, California

last seen... Lake Forest, CA

growing up... "I played a lot of sports; studied hard and again played a lot of sports. I was the curious type, and when a computer crossed my path, I had to have one. At the time there was only a few choices: apples and pets, of course referring to Apple Computer, Inc.'s Apple I computer and Commodore's Pet and 64 models. I saved for an entire summer to buy what was then a little box known as a Texas Instruments 99-4A which connected to a small TV. A month later I returned the TI and with some help from my wonderful parents I bought my first real computer (an 'Apple') and since, I've never been the same."

childhood dream... "At one point in my early adolescent life, I really thought I could become a professional baseball player. I pushed myself to be the best. Finally, I realized this dream was impractical during my senior year of high-school. I just didn't see spending my life in baseball from that point on. I simply was burned out and by some mystical force, math my favorite subject somehow led me to computer programming. And the years to come became very interesting."

early jobs to now... "Programming! Sales! Design! Writing! I put myself near the beach cities of Southern California and participated in every possible way to make money with computers. I was your typical young entreprenuer. I had mostly failures but had successes too. Looking back, I met some powerful people and worked with some brilliant minds. Today, I pride myself to keep pressing on those keys, always looking forward to another day with my pentiums."

on writing & design... "An artistic expression comes from within. Moreover, completion is knowing when to stop. With advanced technology surrounding me, making for unlimited possibilities, I select carefully from a palette of digital choices. When a finished picture is reached, I meticulously summarize its merit with four of my favorite words: Collectibility, Sophisticated, Survival, and Friendship. And ultimately, there in front of me is my reward."

on my professional history... "Eighteen years experience with micro-computers. Twelve strong years conjuring up creative ideas. Five years of storytelling. A past full of personal accomplishments, and an overall satisfaction to have tinkered, pummeled, and toyed with invention."

the cosmos... "It's just a matter of time before we open up the galaxy to further exploration. The cosmos is only now unleashing her secrets. More importantly it's just plain fun to stare out at night into the starlight and imagine what if? And then I stir off to learn more about the cool patterns (constellations) and then I go back inside from where I sleep, and as I walk in, for a moment I feel special, different, OUT THERE! I would hope all of you one day will stop and just map out the sky on a starlit night and bring in heavens beauty.

other life forms... "I believe there is other intelligent life in this vast universe. But what will come first? Superhuman life, mechanical life, or alien life? The evolutionary view leans toward superhumans arriving first some hundred-fifty years from now, with self-teaching robots appearing soon afterwards. As for aliens, yes, the universe will reveal them one day, and no longer will we be humans and aliens, we will become HUMALIENS -- and a book series is born."

to Humaliens Readers... "I do hope two things are result of your monthly dosage of Humaliens page flipping: A reaction to want another, because they are RAH; and secondly, a higher appreciation for science and technology. So enjoy collecting them and by all means read your way to a powerful brain!"
